How to choose the right anti-vibration mount?

Let’s start by saying that every operating machine produces vibrations.

The long-term exposure to vibrations can highly damage the parts and the performance of the machine, considerably reducing its lifespan and depending on the level of vibration discomforting or harming the operator.

This is why it is essential to choose the right anti-vibration mount for every situation.

Here below we will guide you step by step choosing the right solution for you:

1. Know the total weight of the machine

This is an important step to start with. Knowing the weight will help you guess how many anti-vibration mounts you will need and the size of them. Generally, the heavier the machine, the larger the anti-vibration mounts (or the number of anti-vibration mounts) you will need.

2. Check the weight of the anti-vibration mounts you need

In order to uniformly distribute the weight, calculate the load that each anti-vibration mount can carry in order to reach the total weight of the machine. Make sure that the machine is level and its weight is distributed equally and in case place heavier mounts where needed.

3. Measure the running speed of the machine

Also known as RPM (revolutions per minute), it is an important data to know in order to choose the right anti-vibration mount.

4. Identify the static deflection of the anti-vibration mount

Static deflection shows how much your anti-vibration mount will compress under the weight of the machine. Crossing the data of RPM and the weight of the machine will show the hardness your anti-vibration mount has to have. A mount with soft rubber would isolate vibrations more but if the rubber is too soft for the application it might not be able to recover from deformity caused by the stress forces of the engine and it will reduce the effectiveness of the vibration isolation. On the other hand, a mount with a harder rubber would have a higher static load capacity but an excessively hard rubber would be unable to reduce vibrations passing them back to the engine and damaging the parts.

5. Material and shape

Last but not least, do not forget to take into consideration the environmental circumstances. For example, in a marine application, we would recommend using a stainless steel mount to guarantee a longer lifespan for the mount. Regarding the shape, there are plenty of options you can choose from in order to find the right fit to your application. You can find our whole range of anti-vibration mounts here.

6. Time to choose your anti-vibration mount

Based on all this information now you can choose the most suitable anti-vibration mount for your needs.
